Attorney Scott Gross of the Law Offices of Scott Gross, P.C. will be teaching a criminology credit internship titled “Innocence Clinic” at Hofstra University. The internship, which will run from March to May, will focus on real criminal cases that resulted in criminal convictions. Students who join the internship will be responsible for conducting initial assessments of files that pertain to the case they are studying. Once they complete a full analysis of each case, they will further investigate cases they believe resulted in a wrongful conviction.
Participants of the internship will be heavily involved in courtroom litigation and are required to keep track of their tasks to complete a five-page summary of the internship experience. In addition to investigating cases, interns are responsible to attend lectures and read the required materials in order to fulfill the course’s learning objectives.
“Innocence Clinic” will educate students on:
- The criminal justice system process
- The inner workings of the system, including case evaluations
- The role of interactions that take place between police, prosecutors, and courts
- Recognizing the difference in police and prosecutorial jurisdiction and responsibilities
- Local, county, state, and federal justice systems
